Metra continues to travel off track – Metra reached a $1,800,000 personal injury settlement resulting from the 2003 Rock Island train derailment which alleged caused a Plainfield woman to suffer back pain and injuries requiring two lower back surgeries. The train derailed and flipped on its side. A fuel tank consequently ruptured and caught fire. In 2005, the National Transportation Safety Board issued a report blaming the engineer for being distracted when the train went over the crossover much faster than was allowed. This is not the first Metra derailment and unfortunately won’t be the last. One would think that with evolving technology, systems would be created and implemented to prevent such occurrences from taking place in the future.
